About NeuromorphometricsOur origins are with the Center for Morphometric Analysis (CMA) at Massachusetts General Hospital where, since 1985, seminal and ongoing research has produced precisely defined and robustly developed methods for locating and delineating specific neuroanatomical structures. We spun out of the CMA using phase I and II SBIR grants from the NIH starting in 1999. Now we've got customers and are building a reputation for providing reliable and high quality brain measurement services. Through our customers, we are amassing experience and a database of brain measurement results. Incorporating this experience and database is one of the last steps of creating automatic segmentation that works. We are seeking investment to help us finalize and then validate this automation. In exchange, we offer a stake in the company and/or rights to the software. Why invest? You need automated brain segmentation if you or your customers are involved in brain disorders that appear as macroscopic structural changes, or in areas where subject-specific neuroanatomy needs to be known. Our technology will be part of the foundation of the next level of computer aided diagnostics (CAD) in Radiology, Neurology, Psychiatry and Psychology. The currently exciting developments in medical imaging such as 3D visualization and PACS pale by comparison. The quantitative brain measurements produced by automatic segmentation can be used to document diagnoses and response to treatment, and to allow the discovery and application of new treatments. Moreover, anatomical localization is a key part of functional brain imaging. For instance, fMRI procedures will get a boost in statistical significance if, instead of coregistering every scan in a single global reference frame, fMRI signals are averaged over subject-specific regions defined by anatomy in structural scans. As fMRI matures for pharmaceutical and clinical applications, recognizing and quantifying the part of the brain that "lights up" will be crucial.
