The upper left corner of the main nvm window looks like this:

The window title indicates the patient identification number (pid) and scan number (scn). "File Edit Windows Help" are menus. The "Segmenter Prefix" is a button that, when clicked, allows the user to change the text used to save result files. Above, the current Segmenter Prefix is "LoadTest". Outline files are the main result files and in this case would be called, "LoadTest29.xml" (or "LoadTest29.otl" for the gdf version).
The words, "Right Cerebral Exterior" appearing in green in the status bar are the label that appears when the mouse is positioned over an outline with this label. This status bar shows various types of information and error messages. Other messages will appear in the window from which nvm was launched.
Here is an overview of the main image and controls:

Clicking on the "contour color pallet" changes the color of the contour drawn by the Contour Tool, Histogram Tool, etc. The buttons labeled "save otl" and "load otl" are for saving and loading outline files for the current slice. Shift-clicking on these saves or loads all outline files. The SegMentor button shows and hides the SegMentor window. The "Set View" button allows changing what is displayed in the image. The "Update" button will force the data in the image to be redrawn. This is primarily for debugging purposes. Arbitrary slice orientation, thickness, etc. can be used. The tool pallet allows switching the active tool. Landmarks are 3D locations in the data set. Projection lines show where the other images intersect this image. The scroll bar controls which slice is showing. You can drag the current slice bar around, click on the increment/decrement buttons or click anywhere in the scroll bar to change slices.
