The preference window allows you to change many aspects of the program's behavior. The "File" Menu allows you to save and load preference files. The file that is loaded by default is in your home directory and is called ".nvm_preferences.xml". If you change some preferences and then select the File:Save menu item, it will modify this file.
The two tabs at the top divide all possible preferences into those related to "General" nvm behavior and specific "Tools":
